HOW VIOLENCE IS BORN

When I was in high school, a boy I knew joined the Marines and eventually went to Vietnam. We began writing to each other, starting when he was training to be a soldier and extending through two tours of Vietnam.

I first read Lord of the Flies by William Golding in high school. I still have the worn paperback; its pages are so discolored with age they’re almost sepia-toned, but my notes, written in my looped ninth-grade penmanship, are readable.
